Goatfell via Am Binnein

 | Walk description

Tackling Goatfell via Am Binnein takes a route away from the main paths once the lip of Coire Lan has been gained. The Am Binnein ridge is a steep scramble from the path which, once gained, gives spectacular views across to Goatfell and over the Clyde. A gentler ascent leads to Mullach Buidhe and more spectacular view, this time across Glen Sannox to Cir Mhor and the rest of Arran’s mountains.

Following the rim of Coire Lan, the summit of North Goatfell is reached and the view is then of Glen Rosa and beyond. Leaving the summit, a decision is to be made: To take either the less exposed and easier route skirting the jumble of granite tors that is Stacach ridge, or to tackle the ridge direct. It will depend on the conditions on the day, but both are exciting! From the gnarled ridge, a short steep climb gains Goatfell itself, the hard work rewarded by the elating feeling of standing on the highest point of the island with its stunning 360° views of Arran and beyond. The descent leads down to Cladach where Ice Cream and other refreshments await!
